BETHLEHEM LETTER A.D. 2009
Dear Friends,
This is probably my last Bethlehem Letter. I must stop "biting more
than I can chew" and I cannot abuse my two dedicated helpers: Eva Boykin
in Colorado (Language Bridges) and Piotr Chądzyński in Massachusetts, I am becoming incapable of such large undertakings.
This mailing
list grew to almost 200.
The golden years are getting rusty, and so is one's brain. I will be 88
on January 2, can walk fast without a cane, have no many wrinkles,
but the mind slows down: what could be done in 15 minutes takes an hour...
The pencil-draft of this annual report for 2009 is being written in the
St. Nicholas Christmas Hut which opened after Thanksgiving at the Abbey of
Regina Laudis OSB. There are few customers in the morning, the blazing stove
fire warms the heart. More and more people (besides Poles and Lithuanians)
are interested in the OPŁATEK - wafer which I've been distributing for years
(donations for the Bethlehem Food Bank).

I am trying to put my records in order. Jacek Gałązka found for me his
1992 book (out of print) "Polish Heritage Travel Guide to USA and Canada."
Here is a quotation from its chapter on Connecticut:
The name of this Christmastown in Hebrew means House of
Bread. It is therefore most appropriate that Christmas cards with OPŁATEK
(wafer) should be available here, sold at the Christmastown Festival in early
December, the Abbey of Regina Laudis OSB and in the Polish-styled DOMEK
on Flanders Road, the headquarters of a one woman industry of Scouting
(in more sense than one). writing and publishing.
Ewa Gierat is an indefatigable participant in good causes and Polonia
activities. If you happen to be near Bethlehem, give her a call at

132 and 61.
I no longer produce Christmas cards, and my greatest achievement is
my autobiographical collection of letters and documents published in 1998
"Korzenie i owoce" - "Roots and Fruits," thick volume in Polish,
90 pages are in English. Available at the Bethlehem Library.
Our Bethlehem Christmastown Festival (December 4 and 5) enjoyed cold sunset
weather on Friday, but Saturday drizzle, fog and wet snow lowered the
attendance. I was in the Library, promoting the OPŁATEK.
Poles, Lithuanians, Slovaks (even the no-church goers) are attached to the
tradition. It appeals to more and more "non ethnic" Americans and should
be promoted in our "Bethelem House of Bread."
The Christmas Wafer Bakery (P.O. Box 99, Lewiston NY 14092,
tel. 716-283-8911) provides Christmas and Easter items in English, Polish,
Lithuanian, Slovak, Hispanic.

Our Bethlehem Peace Antinuclear Vigil - Sunday 12-1 PM on the Green -
began (before the start of the Iraq War) on December 8, 2002; continued for
five years not a week was ever missed, although sometimes only one person
accompanied the rainbow color PAX-PEACE flag and the poster:
PEACE IS THE FUTURE, WAR IS THE DEAD END
UNITE HUMANITY IN PEACE, NOT IN WAR
As of 2008, we are on the Green only on the first Sunday of the month.
For how long should we continue? The honkings and waiving responses are
most encouraging, but our group is very small. We are accessible on the web:
BethlehemPeaceVigil.blogspot.com. The English portion of this letter is being
included in this blog.
PAX CHRISTI (http://www.paxchristiusa.org/) and several antiwar groups are
firm pacifists. Here is a letter to PAX CHRISTI written by my friend Piotr
Chądzyński who provides me with computer support.
It never got any response.
"Let us not forget that Jesus Christ stood up and fought against the abuse of
his Father's home. And history shows that those who do not fight for the
survival of their own and their families die in oblivion, along with their
children and wives - last notable example is the WW2 holocaust.
Look at the facts - the longest period of relative peace on earth was brought
about by our show of strength during the cold war.
Also - if you don't want to stand up for your freedoms then don't.
But what right do you claim to have to influence national policy?
Why are you keeping others from defending themselves? And what if President
Obama listens to you? Are you going to make it up to the rest of us
if you are wrong? After the next 9/11? What happened to the idea of being
and letting others be?
I am sorry to say, you people may act in good faith, but are badly misguided.
1) Please stop propagating the philosophy of giving up to the will of Satan.
2) Please work towards giving the people of Afghanistan some means of survival.
For example: Buy their corn and other products, so they would not have to
depend on the illegal crop of poppies.
3) Instead of propagating your own religion, please teach and propagate the Knowledge and Respect of other religions - yes
if we are to end wars we must go beyond the mere Coexistence and Tolerance."
I can see the letter's point - yet I think that the matter is much more
complicated: world terrorism will not be conquered by soldiers, bombs and guns,
but rather with electronics, intelligence and buying over individual
supporters of Osama bin Laden.

The DDay Foundation of Bedford, Virginia commemorates the ally victory in
WW2; a monument of Stalin is planned, with Churchill and Roosevelt. Polish and
other veterans are protesting against Stalin's bust in the monument.
So did I: "Do not hate but do not glorify criminals. No monument to Stalin."
In reply I was advised to read page 6 in a twelve pages bulletin which
explains that there will be plaques describing the contribution
of each leader to the victory. The Stalin's plaque will mention the German
attack on Russia (June of 1941) but also will list his atrocities.
"In memory of tens of millions who died under Stalin's rule..."

Only few people read plaques, all will only see Stalin glorified.

My alarm is set for 5:55 on radio WJMJ 88.9 St. Thomas Seminary in Hartford.
It is supposed to broadcast bells and recite the Angelus
at 6 AM, noon and 6 PM for peace and safety of our troops in Afghanistan.
Unfortunately, this is often omitted; there is even no station identification,
but ABC News, Coline Carol Campbell's intelligent religious talking...
Is the announcer free to change the content of the broadcast?
This omission upsets me, especially at 6 AM on Sunday.
Another station I like is WPKT 90.5 FM Connecticut Public Broadcasting.
It is a blessing to live one mile from the Abbey and to attend daily mass,
preceeded by psalms of Terce "Domine ad adiuvandum me festina" starts my day,
and I sing it with fervor. "Lætatus sum in his quae dicta sunt mihi:
in domum Domini ibimus" is written on Stan's grave (☦May 30, 1977)
and on mine next to his in American Częstochowa (Doylestown, Pennsylvania).
Not that I am eager to die, but I feel really tired and want to enjoy the
dynamic splendor of the other side.
When asked by sick or troubled friends for prayers at Regina Laudis, I
recommend the request to the person's guardian angel, firmly believing in
the efficacy of such an arrangement.
It goes also with this letter: I am addressing the guardian angel of each
recipient to watch over you daily. Isn't this the best Christmas greeting
I could send you?

Drodzy Przyjaciele!
Rok mija błyskawicznie. Tygodnie, miesiące uciekają. Bateria w
rozruszniku serca (pacemaker) wymieniona jest po 10-ciu latach,
ale coraz cięższe stają się te 88 lat, które mi z nowym
rokiem wybiją. Gdy słyszę "100 lat" wołam w niebiosa: "Panie, nie
trzymaj mnie tak długo na tym pięknym świecie (wcale nie na łez
padole), chociaż z uporem próbujemy go zniszczyć. Spodziewam się,
że u Ciebie będzie wspanialej...
Od przeszło roku zapisana jestem na mieszkanie w osiedlu seniorów.
Lista czekających jest długa, podobno 5-cioletnia, ale przeraża mnie
myśl przeprowadzki. Mam nadzieję, że wcześniej znajdę się
w wieczystej wspaniałości, wcale nie w "wiecznym odpoczywaniu", które
chyba nie jest śpiączką, lecz niewyobrażalną dynamiką energetyczną.

Mam nadzieję, że FIKUS bedzie w księgarni w POSKu w Londynie.

przeprowadza "online" ankietę, 48 pytań, aby zorientować
się kto to jest
polska grupa etniczna - "Polonia in the 21st century". Ta ważna sprawa nie
była dostatecznie ogłaszana w prasie.
Sama dowiedziałam się o ankiecie z naszej harcerskiej sieci Zorza w moim
hufcu PODHALE, natychmiast odpowiedziałam w połowie listopada.
I oto czytam o zamknięciu ankiety 18 grudnia?! Tylko około 1000 osób
odpowiedziało z 42 stanów. Myślę, że ten pierwszy trzymiesięczny
okres ankiety jest tylko początkiem; trzeba ją kontynuowć.
Powinniśmy mieć co najmniej 10 tysięcy odpowiedzi. Trzeba dostarczyć
papierowe formularze organizacjom i parafiom, ponieważ starsza generacja
nie jest całkowicie skomputeryzowana.

Co roku otrzymuję sprawozdanie Koła Platerek z Polski, przewodnicząca
Maryla Tuszyńska kończy 90 lat, pisze: "Obawiam się, że z chwilą,
gdy grupa nas kilku "chcących i mogących" zamknie oczy, Koło
Platerek umrze śmiercią naturalną."
Utrzymuję kontakt z Platerkami za granicą: Danutą Podkomorską
w Kanadzie (autorka "Remember September" - kostnica szpitala Przemienienia
Pańskiego na Pradze w Warszawie, wrzesień 1939)
oraz w Londynie z Izą Blauth-Muszkowską i z Iwoną
Kępińską-Ożga.

Ślub Józefa Mycielskiego (syn Klary, wnuk mojej siostry) z Vivian
Brenninkmeijer z rodziny holenderskiej odbył się w Londynie 1 sierpnia.
Vivian od piątego roku życia mieszka w Anglii. Mają dom w
Yorkshire, blisko Ampleforth i Torganby (gdzie mieszkają Wanda, Klara i
Krystyna Mycielska - chrzestna matka Klary). W Ampleforth mieści się
opactwo benedyktyńskie i prowadzona przez nich uczelnia, którą
Józef ukończył, a teraz zajmuje tam stanowisko Director of
Development. Tak więc rodzina jest ustabilizowana. Joanna i Charlie
O'Malley z córeczkami Anoushą i Lilunią mieszkają w
Gloucestershire, dwie godziny drogi do Yorku.
Już nie wybiorę się na coroczną wyprawę do Anglii,
może z wiosną Józef z Vivian wpadną do mnie do Bethlehem?

Ważnym rodzinnym wydarzeniem jest, że długa i kosztowna procedura
adoptacyjna dobiega końca: Piotr Gajda z Alyson (zwana Aliską)
będą mieli trzech chłopaczków z Polski, z Domu Dziecka w Łodzi,
przywiozą ich pewno w końcu lutego. Zbyszek i Grażyna czyli dziadkowie,
oraz ciocia Ewa też przeżywac bedą emocje, radości i kłopoty.
"Wonderful" - woła, każdy kto usłyszy tę nowinę.

Spraw harcerskich tu nie poruszam. Na lipcowy Zlot Stulecia ZHP w Polsce w
Zegrzu nie wybieram się. Kilka starszych harcerek otrzyma ten list
dwukrotnie, wysłany bowiem jest na naszej harcerskiej sieci "Zorza".
Boże Narodzenie świętujemy aż do Trzech Króli, dlatego wysyłamy
ten list po świątecznej gorączce, abyście spokojnie go
przeczytali.

aby miał Was i Wasze sprawy w codziennej opiece.
